Patrick Mahomes has taken a handful of snaps in a rookie minicamp so of course it’s time to start comparing him to guys with even less experience than him: the 2018 class of quarterbacks!
I mean, I get that it’s fun to compare players and I get that it’s a lot of projection and nobody really knows but folks always seem to think the grass is greener on the other side. I heard from a number of Chiefs fans not convinced by this year’s quarterback class that they should wait until 2018 because there are so many good quarterbacks coming out. Maybe that’s true. But maybe it’s not! (The hard-hitting analysis you’ve come to expect from us)
One of those good quarterbacks is Josh Allen out of Wyoming. He, Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen are mentioned as a few of the top guys next year. That will definitely change by the time we go through another college football season but until then here’s what Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network says about Allen.
"Just based off what I saw last year, I think Allen is more talented than Mahomes. I would take him over Patrick Mahomes. I think he's got better feet, quicker feet, he's more natural," Jeremiah said during the latest Move The Sticks Podcast. "He's under center, so in some of those things, he's ahead of Mahomes, but they have the same strengths and the same weaknesses."
I believe so much of a quarterback’s success is who they’re coached by and the type of system they’re in. Most quarterbacks have a lot of physical talent but it’s about how much that coach can get out of you. It’s impossible to say we know anything about Mahomes or Allen at this point. It’s still fun to project, though.
