Chiefs have two UDFAs on Mel Kiper’s top 25 list

The Kansas City Chiefs signed a bunch of undrafted free agents after the draft and put them through their rookie minicamp. It’s hard for me to tell you which players are good and which players aren’t because my attentiveness to college football does not go to the undrafted free agent level. I don’t know most (all) of these guys.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper does pay attention to this stuff and he put out a list of his top 25 undrafted free agents and two Chiefs landed on the list. Here’s what Kiper said:

USC G Damien Mama: “At 6-3, 334, Mama, a former USC lineman, lacks athleticism and is strictly a guard, so he doesn't have the versatility of other prospects.”

Oklahoma State CB Ashton Lampkin: “I thought Lampkin (6-0, 201) might run a little faster than his 4.54-second 40 at the combine. He had 25 career special-teams tackles at Oklahoma State, so that could be his way onto a 53-man roster.”

Both players could be practice squad candidates or if they really impress perhaps 53-man roster candidates. Usually these undrafted free agents have to be at a major position of need or have a lot of special teams value as Kiper notes about Lampkin.

There are a couple other UDFAs to watch that folks have mentioned like Oklahoma State safety Jordan Sterns. We’ll keep an eye on these guys as the offseason continues with OTAs in a few weeks.
