Many fans want the Kansas City Chiefs to draft a quarterback in the first round so he can be here for the next decade and win a Super Bowl. I like that plan! The Chiefs need a quarterback of the future and they need a Super Bowl. That all sounds good.
The problem is this list of quarterbacks drafted in the first round since Andrew Luck in 2012:
Robert Griffin III
Ryan Tannehill
Brandon Weeden
EJ Manuel
Blake Bortles
Johnny Manziel
Teddy Bridgewater
Jameis Winston
Marcus Mariota
Jared Goff
Carson Wentz
Paxton Lynch
Quarterbacks you would take over Alex Smith: Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota and ... Carson Wentz? Even then, those guys aren’t slam dunks yet.
I’m not saying the Chiefs shouldn’t draft a quarterback. I think they should and I think they have a better shot at being successful because the Chiefs GM and head coach are better than most. I’m just pointing out how freakin’ hard it is to draft and develop your guy in the NFL these days.
