NFL free agency rumor tracker: Chiefs free agents, cuts, signings, needs

New, comments

The Kansas City Chiefs free agency rumors will begin today. Maybe. Starting at 11 a.m. (Arrowhead Time) on Tuesday, the Chiefs can negotiate deals with the agents for players scheduled to become free agents. They cannot, however, execute contracts before Thursday at 3 p.m., which is the official start of free agency.

We’re tracking all the Chiefs free agency rumors here. Some info below:

Chiefs cap space: $4.3 million via Over The Cap (note: this is unconfirmed)

Chiefs free agents: NT Dontari Poe, DL Kendall Reyes, OL Mike Person, DL Jarvis Jenkins, LB Josh Mauga, RB Knile Davis

Chiefs restricted free agents: WR Albert Wilson, K Cairo Santos, S Daniel Sorensen

Chiefs exclusive rights free agents: WR Kenny Cook, FB Trey Millard

Chiefs team needs: QB, RB, LB

(Click here for definitions of restricted and exclusive rights free agents .... Tl;dr: the Chiefs basically control the rights of the RFAs and ERFAs)

Chiefs making more moves, finally bringing back one of their own free agents.

I wouldn’t like him going to Indy.

Good deal. I like Sorensen a lot.

Whaaat? They just fired Scot McCloughan on Thursday.

The Chiefs will bring in another quarterback, maybe two. We think (hope) that one comes from the draft. If they were going to bring in a veteran, RGIII’s name is out there now.

That would be Pioli striking again. He drafted Poe in 2012. The one-year talk remains.

He had the best year of his career last year. The 49ers aren’t keeping him. He’s an inside guy. We’ll see what comes of this but the Chiefs need inside linebacker help.

This guy was the Texans fourth corner a year ago. It’s like paying Steven Nelson this deal next year.

Fisher over Joeckel was indeed the right move.

Just a one-year deal. He must not have been getting the long-term offers he wanted.

Wait, what? This came out of nowhere. So the Texans basically pay to dump Osweiler and his salary with a second round pick. Incredible. You’re willing to give up a second just to get rid of him. Cleveland had $100 million in cap space so they had to spend somewhere. I doubt they commit long-term to Osweiler.

Old friend alert.

About that guard market ... LDT was at $8 million per year, which looks like a bargain compared to this.

I like him so I’m glad he won’t be going to Denver.

Hold up. What? It was reported on Wednesday that the Cowboys were going to cut him. I don’t believe the Cowboys ever officially said anything but here we get this. I hate to say it but the Broncos are a good fit ...

I’ve never been a Cutler fan. Give me Alex Smith over him. I wonder where he goes next. New York?

Hey, good for Aaron Murray.

Looks like Dorsey was right about the guard market. I thought $8 million per year was a lot for Laurent Duvernay-Tardif but now Ron Leary comes in over $8 million per year and it sounds like the top guards on the free agent market will be getting $10-12 million per year.

I’d call this a minor surprise. Assuming he doesn’t get any other offers, that’ll be $1.8 million next year.

This is in response to someone asking about WR Kamar Aiken. He had nearly 1,000 yards in 2015 but just 328 in six starts last year. We’ll see if anything comes of this one.

What. My gosh, the rich get richer ... they just signed Stephon Gilmore, one of the top corners on the market. We’ll see if this actually happens.

There it is. This will give the Chiefs nearly $7 million in additional cap space. The Chiefs are in the market for a backup quarterback. I hear you can find one of those in the first round of the draft ...

This is supposed to be a big money deal. Some people were talking about $14 million per so we’ll see where the numbers are. Sometimes players take less in New England because they’re going to be Super Bowl contenders. This means the Patriots are probably losing Logan Ryan to free agency.

Alex Smith is the 21st highest paid quarterback. This will make Glennon the 23rd highest paid quarterback. Life comes at you fast.

Hey there, Jamaal! My thoughts on this potential signing here.

Goodbye, Martellus Bennett. The Patriots tight end will hit free agency and this would make it appear he’s not coming back. Someone should give Bennett a good deal.

Yup. Old friend Scott Pioli is with the Falcons. He also signed Tyson Jackson after he left KC. The Colts are another team folks mention as well as Washington.

He’ll make $1.8 million next year.

That will be roughly $2.7 million. He will be safe at the second round level. A sign the Chiefs like him.

Jason Cole reported earlier that Poe might take a one-year deal and try again in 2018 because his market wasn’t what they thought. Or he could be going to Washington, the most dysfunctional team in the league.
