Sometimes I wonder if the quarterback fervor in Kansas City is coming only from fans or if there’s a real chance that the Kansas City Chiefs take a quarterback in the first round. We can add the KC Star’s Terez Paylor to those who believe it’s a real possibility. Terez posted his first mock draft and will make some Chiefs fans happy with his pick: Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes.
Terez says that if none of the top four quarterbacks - Mahomes, Mitchell Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer - are there, the Chiefs could trade down again. I’m generally in favor of trading down because it’s usually a good value but the Chiefs also have 10 picks already this year. Last year, they didn’t have a third round pick and traded back to collect more picks. This year they have four of the top 104 picks. Additionally, the Chiefs are a pretty good team. I’m not sure if they added more picks they would all make the roster.
Here’s a snippet on Mahomes, who Terez says the Chiefs have done plenty of work on.
He’s a gunslinger with a cannon for an arm and plus intangibles, but he’s very raw and will likely need at least a year to get accustomed to the lengthy verbiage in coach Andy Reid’s playbook. Mahomes has never had to call lengthy plays with regularity, and that’s something all quarterbacks have to do in Kansas City. The good news is that Reid is very good at scheming up concepts for his quarterbacks, so they often make predetermined reads, and with Mahomes’ arm and willingness to chuck it deep, he could potentially open up the playbook in a way Chiefs fans haven’t seen consistently.
He has a lot more analysis here along with a couple of interesting draft nuggets. With all this quarterback talk, it’s going to be really disappointing if they don’t get one in the first or even second round.
