Dontari Poe is officially a free agent but we have no idea what his market is. The NFL free agency rumors were light on Poe on day one with a report that some teams are interested, including Washington (who has since signed a defensive lineman), San Francisco, Indianapolis and Atlanta.
However, there is no hard news of any contract offers or visits. I assume that the Chiefs are still involved until someone tells me they’re not. Chiefs GM John Dorsey said last week he was going to “fight like the dickens” to keep Poe but the Chiefs have some cap limitations.
ESPN’s Ed Werder was asked about Poe and he said, “Concerns about his back and he's asking a lot -which DT Brandon Williams just got.”
Poe, who was reported to be looking for $10 million per year, has played two seasons since his back surgery in the summer of 2015. Williams, another one of the top defensive lineman available, signed a five-year, $54 million contract. Williams is more of a run stuffer than Poe (who, to be fair, hasn’t rushed the passer really well in a couple years).
The longer we wait, the more I wonder if Poe could come back. Johnathan Hankins is the other top defensive lineman.
