Jamaal Charles will be released by Chiefs, become free agent

The end of an era. The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing Jamaal Charles, according to a report from ESPN’S Adam Schefter.

This is a tough one. The Chiefs will free up more than $6 million in cap space - cap space that they need after signing Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and Eric Berry to long-term deals (not official yet).

It doesn’t say when the release is coming but presumably very soon. This would give Jamaal a little bit of time to prepare for the start of free agency. He has said he does want to continue playing. But after knee injuries sidelines him most of the last two seasons, it’s understandable why the Chiefs aren’t bringing him back.

There are a generation of Chiefs fans who grew up with Jamaal Charles as their favorite back. This is a tough, tough day for Chiefs fans.
