The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Miami Dolphins 29-13 to clinch the AFC West title. The Chiefs are headed to the playoffs for the third consecutive years and for the first time in franchise history they have won the AFC West in back to back seasons.

The Chiefs have a 4,000 yard passer this season (Alex Smith), two 1,000 yard receivers (Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill) and a 1,000 yard rusher (Kareem Hunt). What a season for the Chiefs, who finish up the regular season next week at the Broncos.

That game next week against the Broncos could feature Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs could choose to sit their starters. Andy Reid has done that in the past so I would expect that.

Full stats are here.

Fourth quarter

Chiefs K Harrison Butker pulled a Cairo Santos and banked it off the upright for a FG to make it 29-13.

Chiefs FG makes it 26-13 early in the fourth quarter.

Third quarter

Marcus Peters forced his fifth turnover in the past seven quarters (two interceptions, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery).

Was this a catch? The refs say no.

The Chiefs started the second half with the ball and drove right down and scored what they thought was a Tyreek Hill TD. The refs ruled he didn’t catch a pass in the end zone so the Chiefs kicked a FG instead. 23-13, Chiefs.

Second quarter

Another long pass to Tyreek Hill (33 yards) puts the Chiefs in FG range to take a 20-13 lead at halftime.

Ugh, the Chiefs defense can’t tackle. 17-13, Chiefs.

Chiefs take 17-6 lead late in the second quarter on the heels of Kareem Hunt, who has 61 yards on 12 carries so far on the day.

So close:

Dolphins kick another FG to make it 10-6 Chiefs in the second quarter.

Chiefs take 10-3 lead with a great 9-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith and catch from Travis Kelce. Cool shot from a fan:

Alex Smith threw a 53-yard DIME to Tyreek Hill.

First quarter

The Dolphins get down the field and kick a field goal on their second offensive drive to tie the game at 3.

The Chiefs looked good but came up short on third and short. The Chiefs settled for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

Derrick Johnson (forced fumble) and Marcus Peters (fumble recovery) team up for a turnover on the Dolphins first drive of the game.
