The Chiefs pass rush was strong again, and that’s important

I am not right very often so when I am you can expect me to remind you again and again. I said before this game that the key to the Chiefs beating the Chargers is the Chiefs pass rush. They needed to continue the momentum they started last week against the Raiders and they did just that. The pass rush was strong which helped in a three interception night for Rivers.

Eric Murray killed the first drive with a sack (the second straight game the Chiefs have sacked the quarterback on the opening drive). Chris Jones had a sack as he continued his strong play up the middle. Justin Houston didn’t get a sack but he consistently flashed and made Rivers uncomfortable.

So what was the result of all this pass rush? Rivers against pressure last night (via PFF): 5/11 for 83 yards, two INTs, two sacks and a 31.8 rating.

The pass rush is the key. Say it again: the pass rush is the key. If the Chiefs defense is going to have more games like this where they give up just 13 points it will be because Jones is coming up the middle, safeties are coming in exotic blitzes and Justin Houston is being Justin Houston.

Rivers was a huge test. He is HARD to sack. This is not a small accomplishment for this pass rush. Great job by them.
