One of the first stories I wrote this week was my concern over the Chargers pass rushers, Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa. That’s the first thing I thought of when we started talking about the Chargers defense. They got after Alex Smith pretty well when the Chiefs played the Chargers last time around.
Chiefs OC Matt Nagy is obviously aware of Bosa and Ingram and calls them the best in the league right now.
“They’re, as a tandem right now, playing in my opinion probably the best in the league as far as bookend guys,” Nagy said. “We understand that and it’s been a theme, you guys know, I’ve been saying it all year long that these defensive lineman are aggressive across the board in the NFL. But when you have two guys playing in the style that they play, a lot of spin moves, a lot of games that they do and they create lanes by doing that, then on top of that they’re just full of energy. They’re very successful this year.”
The pressure will absolutely be on Eric Fisher and Mitch Schwartz. The blueprint is out there on the Chiefs. If you get to Alex Smith early, you can affect his game. The Chargers are going to try and do that.
As I noted earlier, the Chiefs have to be ready for this and not just quick dump-offs. They’ll still need to have opportunities to stretch the field which means sitting in the pocket longer and making sure these guys are blocked.
I’m concerned. I hope the Chiefs are ready for it.
