Earlier in the week KC Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that the Tamba Hali situation was between him, GM Brett Veach and Tamba’s reps. I thought, why do Tamba’s reps matter here? What do they have to do with him coming off the PUP list?
Maybe this is it.
#Chiefs Tamba Hali, now practicing, had his contract tweaked. Got a $250K signing bonus & $1M from ’18 moved from base to Mar 1 roster bonus

Cap expert Joel Corry says the $250k makes up for the $250k he lost in active roster bonuses on game day this season while on PUP. It adds $125k of cap space to next year’s cap, according to Corry.
“Money was shifted from 2018 base salary to a March roster bonus so KC is less likely to get a free look through training camp on Tamba Hali,” Corry wrote on Twitter.
I think this is mostly about making a decision on Tamba by March rather than waiting it out until right before the season. As a veteran, you can see why Tamba would want that.
More from Corry on the why part of this: “It's more of a small gesture of goodwill for a long time Chief than anything else. Team didn't have to do anything with Tamba Hali's deal.”
