There are always finer points of the game that you don’t know unless you’re on the field experiencing it. One I found out today that I didn’t know: Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt knows a lot about field goal kicking!
Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub met the media this week and he was asked about how Colquitt and long snapper James Winchester helped rookie kicker Harrison Butker.
“Dustin is like a kicker whisperer,” Toub said. “He speaks that language and he talks and he knows exactly what went wrong when he misses. He knows a lot more than I know. I just know getting the ball through the uprights is good, but Dustin he knows the finer points doing it so long as a veteran and one of the best holders in the league, he knows all the finer points to kicking.”
Huh, I never would’ve figured that. I thought holder was one of those jobs that was pretty easy and as long as you don’t screw up there’s not much to it. It’s yet another way that Colquitt shows his value.
Speaking of value, Toub also started his presser by congratulating Colquitt on being the first punter in NFL history with 400 punts inside the 20. Toub said he wished he could take credit for it but Colquitt was doing this long before he arrived.
