KC Chiefs QB Alex Smith had 56 rushing yards against the Redskins on Monday night. It felt like the Old Alex Smith was back because in his first few years in Kansas City he was great on the run.
Last year, he just wasn’t. He didn’t have any big running games or hardly any big running moments. Maybe it was the defense’s keying in on him or maybe he was trying to make it happen from the pocket. Whatever it was, he wasn’t running.
It shouldn’t surprise you then to hear that Alex’s 56 rushing yards against Washington was the most he’s had in a game since the end of the 2015 season. More than any game in 2016.
Alex popped up on the injury report this week with an ankle injury. He’s been practicing in full and there’s no talk of him missing the game or having an injury that’s going to seriously affect him. However, it must be some level of discomfort if it was enough to land him on the injury report.
I remember in the Eagles game he was banged up pretty good and the Redskins got after him a couple of times when he couldn’t cleanly slide on a scramble. He’s going to take some hits if he scrambles regularly. That’s part of the deal.
Alex hasn’t had a bunch of injuries in Kansas City and is generally pretty good at protecting himself so this doesn’t concern but it’s certainly something to watch as we go on here.
As for the rest of the injury report, G Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, C Mitch Morse and LB Dee Ford haven’t practiced all week so don’t count on them playing this weekend against the Texans.
