The status of KC Chiefs TE Travis Kelce will be a big story this week after the Chiefs announced that Kelce is in the concussion protocol. He was hit hard last week by a Texans player (who was flagged for the hit) and, after briefly going back in the game, came out for good in the second half. Reporters after the game said they saw Kelce and he seemed to be acting OK but that’s not necessarily a sign that he’s cleared to play.
The Chiefs are off today but will return to practice on Wednesday which is the first time we should have a hint on what Kelce’s status is. If he’s practicing on Wednesday, he should be good to go for Sunday’s game against the Steelers.
However, if Kelce isn’t practicing and potentially won’t play, the Chiefs offense will take a big hit. As ESPN’s Adam Teicher detailed in this piece, the Chiefs really like their multiple tight end sets and use them all the time. If Kelce is out, those multiple tight end sets would go to Demetrius Harris and Ross Travis. The Chiefs have a tight end on the practice squad, Neal Sterling.
