Chargers ask permission to interview Chiefs ST coach Dave Toub

KC Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub is a wanted man. In a good way. It’s being reported that the Chargers have requested permission from the Chiefs to interview Dave Toub for their head coaching vacancy.

The Chargers fired Mike McCoy about an hour after the Chiefs beat them in the season finale on Sunday. It’s not clear yet whether the interview will happen or when. ESPN’s Adam Schefter said this is not the only team expected to ask for an interview.

It seems there has been more momentum for Toub this year than in years past. He’s known as a great special teams coach but it’s just that. A special teams coach. Most NFL coaches come from an offensive or defensive coordinator but we’ve heard from insiders who say Toub is head coach material regardless.

The last guy to coach special teams under Andy Reid and get hired as a head coach did pretty well: John Harbaugh.

With Tyreek Hill already the league’s best return man, it would be a shame to see these two not working together.

Our friends over at our Chargers blog, Bolts From The Blue, call him one of the best candidates.
