Report: Colts request GM interview with Chiefs’ Chris Ballard

Maybe Chris Ballard isn’t staying in Kansas City after all. It’s being reported that the Indianapolis Colts, who just fired GM Ryan Grigson this week, have requested permission to interview the Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard, according to USA Today.

There’s a lot to unpack here. The Chiefs reportedly denied Ballard permission to interview in San Francisco (perhaps as cover for not wanting to interview). So, will the Chiefs grant this interview? (Is that even how it works now that the season is over?) Does Ballard want this job?

The other part of this is the future of Chiefs GM John Dorsey. Reports linked him to the Green Bay GM job next year if Ted Thompson leaves. Who knows what the validity of that is but if Dorsey could potentially leave it would be nice to have someone like Ballard waiting there in the front office.

The Colts job, I would think, is attractive because of Andrew Luck. They are apparently not going to fire Chuck Pagano so that’s not ideal not having a choice on your head coach but Luck is the equalizer. If you put a decent roster together, the Colts will compete.
