I thought this was the year for Dave Toub. The Kansas City Chiefs special teams coach interviewed for the Denver Broncos and San Diego LA Chargers head coaching jobs. The Broncos hired Vance Joseph from the Dolphins and the Chargers reportedly just hired Anthony Lynn from the Bills.
So ... Dave Toub is staying?
I don’t know that we’ll get an official announcement that he’s staying but it sure looks that way. I don’t know of any other interviews he had and I would be surprised if any interviews took place after the Chiefs were out of the playoffs (err, after the Super Bowl).
That would be great news for the Chiefs. Tyreek Hill will get another year with the best special teams coach in the NFL. The Chiefs should feel very fortunate if he does stay because special teams are a big reason they’re averaging 10 wins a season since Andy Reid arrived. This Chiefs formula doesn’t work without special teams.
For Toub personally, it has to be disappointing. It’s good though that he got his name out there and got a couple of interviews. Hopefully his name is in the cycle of coaches who interview and it’s only a matter of time. Toub agrees.
“This is my fourth one now,” Toub said Thursday, “I’ve got four done. Each time I do one I feel like I’ve gotten better. I think it’s good because the awareness that a special teams coach can actually do this job I think has really come to forefront this year and I think down the road it’s only a matter of time before it gets done.”
