The Kansas City Chiefs will be favored in most of the games they play this season, including the season opener against the San Diego Chargers. According to SB Nation’s NFL odds page, the Chiefs are 7-point favorites over the Chargers. One site even has them at 7.5-point favorites.
Seven points is a big line in the NFL. In fact, the only game with a bigger line than that is the Seattle Seahawks hosting the Miami Dolphins as 10.5-point favorites.
I’m almost too comfortable right now. The Chiefs are the better team without a doubt. They should absolutely win this game. But season openers have been funny for the Chiefs in the past. As ESPN’s Adam Teicher points out, two of the Chiefs season openers in the Andy Reid era have been decided by at least 16 points - one a Chiefs win and one a loss.
A few more Week 1 odds observations:
The Broncos are home underdogs. How the mighty have fallen. The defending champs are hosting the Panthers and will have a rockin’ house. Except they’ll be ‘dogs.
The Raiders are 1-point road underdogs. This is actually a nod to the Raiders improvement as the Superdome isn’t an easy place to win.
The Cardinals are 6-point favorites over the Patriots. This is the first of four games without Tom Brady.
