The Kansas City Chiefs multi-year extension given to Eric Fisher this offseason came out of the blue and was criticized by plenty of people. Fisher had gotten better each year but he was still merely an average tackle and a No. 1 pick no less. What were the Chiefs thinking paying him like a top tackle?
Apparently, they were thinking he was on the verge of taking a big step. I wrote at the time that the extension was the Chiefs paying him for what he can do, not what he has done.
So, what can he do? He can end the week as Pro Football Focus’s top ranked left tackle.
Let me repeat that: Eric Fisher is PFF’s No. 1 ranked tackle in Week 1.
I know, I know, the Chargers front isn’t the Seahawks or Rams front. More tests will come. Still, some context is there because Fisher played pretty well in the preseason, too. This didn’t come out of nowhere. The Chiefs told us back in his first summer in the league that it would take a while. Through one week four years later, they were right.
Up next? The rematch against JJ Watt, who contemplated retirement the last time he faced Eric Fisher (this is gonna be a fun week).
