Chiefs training camp 2016: Three players that are impressing

We’re more than a week into KC Chiefs training camp so it’s time to take stock of what we’ve seen so far. Here are a few Chiefs players that have stood out to me.

TE Ross Travis turning heads

You know you’re a deep team when the battle for the third tight end is an intriguing one we’re actually interested in. We think the Chiefs top two tight ends are Travis Kelce and Demetrius Harris. Perhaps Harris could be pushed but the third tight end seems to be up in the air. Ross Travis showed up third on the depth chart and has been showing out throughout the offseason. This is one of those where you have to wonder what he’ll look like when they’re playing for real with live tackling. Travis is a former basketball player so his strength and toughness will be tested when the hits start counting.

WR Tyreek Hill, the talk of training camp

I knew he would be hyped heading into camp because of the type of player he is. I just didn’t know I would believe the hype so much. I’ve seen him play and I’ve seen him fly. The Chiefs coaches say he’s incredibly fast. They think this will translate to games. I’ve questioned everything I can about him. It’s time to see him play in a real game.

CB Steven Nelson, more than a nickel corner?

I thought at his size he would be a subpackage player. It’s most often been Phillip Gaines on the outside when I’ve been up at camp but Nelson has also seen time there too. On the Chiefs first depth chart, Nelson is listed as the starter opposite Peters. He’s also got the attitude corners need. He broke up a pass to Chris Conley and stood up to do the Sean Smith incomplete sign. Another pass breakup later in practice and Nelson shook his finger like Mutumbo! Stay tuned, he could be a fun one.
