The Kansas City Chiefs drafted WR Demarcus Robinson in the fourth round so clearly they believe he has a future with the team. I’m going to put Robinson on my 53-man roster prediction but when I look at the Chiefs WR depth chart it’s kind of hard to fit him in.
Robinson has had seven, 16 and 10 snaps in the first three preseason games. In each of those games he saw at least five special teams snaps, too. He was not targeted in the first game, caught one pass for 15 yards in the second game and had one target but no catches in the third preseason game. I’m thinking special teams will be key for him this year.
These five are likely to make the Chiefs roster as receivers: Jeremy Maclin, Chris Conley, Albert Wilson, Tyreek Hill and Rod Streater.
The Chiefs usually keep six receivers. That means at best Robinson would be the sixth receiver, which wouldn’t have much of a role this year (barring injuries).
If they do keep six, Robinson is competing with De’Anthony Thomas, Frankie Hammond and others for the final spot. DAT and Hammond both return kicks as does Robinson. Those two can probably do more than Robinson this year but long term? The Chiefs are probably going to bet on Robinson (as they should).
There are a lot of interesting roster positions the Chiefs are in, including with Robinson. The challenge is keeping and developing a guy like him for the future while managing the rest of your roster.
