Chiefs’ Dontari Poe isn’t overrated but it is a big contract year for him

Whenever Pete Prisco of CBS Sports writes something about the Kansas City Chiefs, it’s almost guaranteed to make you upset. His recent post on the most overrated player for each team may do that.

Prisco picks Dontari Poe as the most overrated Chief. Prisco knocks Poe for his injury last year.

“Coming off back surgery, he didn't play up to standards last season,” Prisco wrote. “He had just one sack in 15 games after combining to get 10.5 the previous two seasons. This is a big year for Poe who is in a contract year.”

Nah, that’s not right. Most people don’t realize just how much he plays so overrated isn’t the right term here.

You can choose to believe the back surgery will affect him in 2016 or you can choose to believe he’ll be back to 100 percent. I tend to believe the latter because he has proven to be a terrific athlete.

Prisco is right that this is a huge contract year for Poe, who is playing on his fifth-year option. The Chiefs will likely want to keep him but after not signing Eric Berry that seems like a big question mark. This is a huge year for Poe.
