Eric Berry not expected to show for Chiefs mandatory minicamp but that’s OK

New, comments

Filed under non-surprising, it’s being reported that Eric Berry is not expected at the Kansas City Chiefs mandatory minicamp this week. This according to NFL Network's Rand Getlin who reported the news last night.

Yeah, didn’t think so. Here’s what Andy Reid said about it last week: “I don’t know where we are with (Berry’s contract). If he’s here, we’re going to coach him. If he’s not, we’ll coach the next guy.”

Berry has been absent all offseason after the Chiefs slapped him with the franchise tag. However, Berry has not signed the tag which means he is not eligible to be fined for missing the mandatory minicamp. That will save him about $76k.

Berry has been in this defense for the past three seasons. He’s a smart player and knows the defense. While everyone would prefer he be in attendance than not, no one thinks this absence will have a major affect on him. Justin Houston proved the past two years you can skip these things and still come in and have a good year.

The next real deadline with Berry is July 15. If the two sides don't agree to a deal by then, Berry would have to play out the season under the one-year franchise tender worth approximately $10.8 million. The Chiefs signed Houston on July 15 last year so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they did the same with Berry.
