The Godfather Gil Brandt has reported that the Kansas City Chiefs were on hand for the Southern Miss pro day. Specifically, Brandt reports that the Chiefs DB coach was in attendance. I'm not sure if that means Emmitt Thomas or Al Harris.
The target could be Southern Miss CB Kalan Reed, a 5'11 corner who could be drafted later this month. He is someone that is loved by Pro Football Focus, who gave him the third highest coverage grade in this class.
"Many of the players that grade very well at PFF simply don't fit the size and speed profile the NFL covets at corner and so aren't even on the radar of many teams," PFF writes in their profile of Reed. "Reed is different. At 5-foot-11 and 199-pounds with a 40 time in the 4.3s, he ticks every box from a physical standpoint, and this past season had tape to rival any corner in this class. He may have some competition questions to answer having played at Southern Mississippi, but you can only play what is in front of you, and this season Reed allowed only 48.3 percent of passes thrown his way to be caught."
Southern Miss isn't the SEC but you can't fault him for that. The Chiefs do seem to like size in their cornerbacks and Reed is about there with his size. The Chiefs also like players like Peters that attack the ball and Reed fits the bill there too with a school record 19 pass breakups last season.
The Chiefs absolutely need to come out of this draft with a cornerback but we have been focusing on the first round. It's just as likely that the Chiefs have players they like in later rounds too.
