JaMarcus Russell hasn't played in the NFL since 2009, which is forever ago in this league. Scott Pioli was just in his first year as a GM when Russell last played. Todd Haley was a head coach!
So it's a bit surprising to me that Russell appears to legitimately be trying to get back into the NFL. SI.com has an interview where Russell talks about wanting to play again and it was even revealed that he sent a letter to teams last year. A snippet of his letter to the Cowboys was on SI.com:

Russell said in the video "you never know" when talking about playing again.
No. We definitely know. Russell will not play again. Even with the lack of QBs and the league's obsession with quarterbacks, Russell isn't going to play again. I would bet a lot of money on that.
Russell said he would play in the NFL for free which is good because I don't think anyone would pay him at this point.
