SB Nation's Dan Kadar released a three-round 2016 NFL mock draft which is of course only two rounds for the Kansas City Chiefs because Roger Goodell caught them slipping and stole a third round pick from them.
The first two picks in SB Nation's latest mock hit on cornerback and defensive tackle. However you rank the Chiefs needs, those two are probably in the top five so already I like the idea of this pick.
Let's take a look at who is still on the board with these two picks.
First round: Ohio State CB Eli Apple
Still on the board: S Karl Joseph, DT Robert Nkemdiche, DT Vernon Butler, S Vonn Bell
Outside of Joseph, I've seen those other three still on the board mocked to the Chiefs at one point. Nkemdiche doesn't seem very likely (probably not?) while Butler or Bell do seem like legit possibilities. Kiper mocked Bell to KC while the KC Star's Terez Paylor has mocked Butler previously. I know you aren't supposed to draft for need but Apple happens to fill one so I still like that pick.
Second round: Nebraska DT Maliek Collins
You're not going to like who is left on the board here: WR Braxton Miller, CB Artie Burns, LB Jaylon Smith
Miller has become a favorite around here. The Chiefs offense lacked explosion at times last year and Miller can be explosive. Check out our write up on him. Makes sense to me. Meanwhile, Burns could be the second round option at cornerback if the Chiefs don't go there in the first. I've also seen Burns mocked to KC in the first round while others have him lower so he's all over the board.
The Jaylon Smith pick all comes down to the medicals next week when teams get a look at him. Until then, we're completely guessing on him. However, if the Chiefs were relatively sure that he would miss a year and come back to be the same player in 2017, I would strongly consider a day two pick on him.
