The Kansas City Chiefs are probably going to need to draft a defensive lineman high or sign one in free agency because of the contract situations of Dontari Poe and Jaye Howard. Perhaps this is the year to consider drafting one because this is considered a deep defensive line draft.
The MMQB's Peter King collected comments from 10 team decision makers and evaluators and a couple of them on the defensive line stood out.
"Best defensive tackle draft I've seen, easy."
"The defensive tackle crop's so good it'll push some deserving players into the second round. The depth is so good that you'll get some guys you can use right away in the third and fourth."
Two ways to look at this. The defensive line draft is so good that the Chiefs can get a GREAT one at No. 28. Or ... the draft is so deep with defensive linemen that the Chiefs can wait until the second or fourth round to still get a good one (but not the third, thanks Goodell).
The Chiefs probably should come out of here with a defensive lineman. The Chiefs front line depth is good for the 2016 season but defensive linemen can take a little bit of time to develop so the Chiefs should be looking forward to the 2017 or 2018 seasons with a defensive lineman this year. They can afford to be patient and develop, which is a good thing.
