The KC Star's Terez Paylor reports Kansas City Chiefs free agent CB Sean Smith is getting a lot of interest in free agency so far. A report out of Oakland said the Raiders would be among the teams pursuing him and a report out of San Francisco says the 49ers will pursue him, too.
Over The Cap has the 49ers with the second most cap space at $62 million and the Raiders with the third most at $60 million. So, yeah, they can afford Smith, who could be looking at a deal worth more than $10 million per year. Smith came to KC on a three-year, $16.5 million deal and waited on 2016 when the salary cap continued to go up. That looks like a very good decision now as Smith is one of the best corners available in a year when teams have a ridiculous amount of cap space .
I would clearly prefer Smith go to the 49ers over the Raiders because KC wouldn't be playing San Francisco twice a year. It'd be tough to see Smith in silver and black.
We never really expected Smith back in KC but Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson reports the Chiefs did make a conservative offer to him. I'm not sure how much that was but if I were Smith I would be hitting the market no matter what the Chiefs offered. The money is flowing like crazy right now.
#Chiefs know they'll have to raise the current offer to CB Sean Smith to retain him. Not sure they will. #Raiders & #49ers will be in play.
