Chiefs free agency rumor tracker 2016: Live updates, news, signings and more (Tuesday)

The legal tampering period continues. While the 2016 NFL free agency period opens on Wednesday afternoon, teams and players can still talk and negotiate contracts before then. However, they can't consummate any contracts until free agency opens at 3 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) on Wednesday.

We heard a number of Kansas City Chiefs free agency rumors on Monday, including some potential optimism with Tamba Hali's futureDe'Anthony Thomas trade rumorRaiders and 49ers making a run at Sean Smith, interest in WR Rod Streater and Robert Griffin III to Chiefs predictions ... among others.

Here are the Chiefs free agents: CB Sean Smith, LB Tamba Hali, DT Jaye Howard, LB Derrick Johnson, G Jeff Allen, S Tyvon Branch, DE Mike DeVito, OT Donald Stephenson, QB Chase Daniel, S Husain Abdullah, WR Jason Avant, LB Frank Zombo, CB Jamell Fleming, LB Dezman Moses

Here are the Chiefs top needs: Cornerback, offensive tackle, defensive line, receiver ... and the rest depends on free agency.

Stay tuned for Chiefs free agency updates throughout the day ... we're updating it here.

Tuesday's updates

Donald Stephenson to the Broncos, reports Terez Paylor. Wow!

The Vikings cut WR Mike Wallace. He has speed. Does anyone want him?

It's being reported the Eagles are still in play for Chiefs QB Chase Daniel. The Eagles just signed Sam Bradford to a two-year deal. Hmm...

TAMBA TIME!!! 3 more years! He got a three-year, $22 million contract.

The Raiders are making free agent G Kelechi Osemele very RICH. Osemele, the top guard on the market, is signing an $11 million per year deal with the Raiders. That's top five o-line money. Too rich for a guard? Yikes. I'd rather have Sean Smith for that money.

OT Joe Barksdale gets four more years with the Chargers. He was one of the bargain OTs we talked about with the Chiefs recently. I'm getting a little nervous about OT.

The Raiders AND 49ers are reportedly pursuing Chiefs CB Sean Smith. I've already accepted he's gone. And for the record, I choose San Francisco over Oakland.

Monday's updates

DeMarco Murray traded to the Titans. Wow. Doug Pederson trades Byron Maxwell AND Murray? Damn!

Optimism with Tamba Hali? CBS Sports Jason La Canfora reports there is plenty of interest in Tamba around the league La Canfora has "a feeling" that Tamba comes back to KC. Chiefs fans are hoping he's right...

The Chiefs need an OT and one of the better ones in Raiders OT Donald Penn is going to hit free agency. This might be too pricey for the Chiefs. I imagine the Chiefs are going to do some bargain hunting at OT.

Eagles are talking about trading CB Byron Maxwell AND LB Kiko Alonso to the Dolphins. Maxwell signed a huge contract last year (six years, $63 million). Good job by Doug Pederson if the Eagles can get out of that contract. I wouldn't be shocked if Sean Smith got a similar deal this year.

The Dolphins are reportedly planning on cutting CB Brent Grimes. He's 5'10 and has been a Pro Bowler in the past. The last Dolphins corner signed by the Chiefs worked out pretty well (that would be Sean Smith).

The Chiefs have some interest in former Raiders WR Rod Streater, according to Terez Paylor.

A Bay Area radio host says the Chiefs and 49ers have talked about a De'Anthony Thomas trade. Huh? DAT's season ended oddly so I guess I can see this. Would you rather have a sixth or seventh round pick or DAT? I'd probably lean to the latter.

Robert Griffin III has been released. Media folks are saying the Chiefs make the most sense, and I would agree if a) the money is cheap and b) RGIII is willing to sit behind Alex Smith for a year or two. Other than that I'm not sure it's worth the Chiefs time.

The Jets may let QB Ryan Fitzpatrick hit the free agent market. New York could be a team that looks at QB Chase Danielif that's the case.
