Chiefs' Spencer Ware, Charcandrick West getting contract extensions

The Kansas City Chiefs are signing their Jamaal Charles replacements to a contract extension. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West are getting new deals today. The Chiefs have since confirmed the news. (UpdateThey reportedly got the same deal)

Rapoport calls it a two-year extension for Ware worth $3.6M. It has a total value of $9.6M based on yards and touchdowns.

"Charcandrick and Spencer both stepped in and were very effective for us offensively last year," Chiefs GM John Dorsey said in a statement. "These guys have different styles and abilities, and together they provide us quality depth at the running back position."

I'm sure these aren't big money deals but this is interesting because we have speculated about the future of West and Ware. Now that Jamaal Charles is healthy, would the Chiefs consider trading one of them? I'm guessing that answer is no for now with this news. (Hi, Knile!) As for Jamaal's future, he is under contract through the 2017 season.

Note that Dorsey refers to West and Ware as depth. Jamaal Charles still figures to be the lead back but perhaps the Chiefs will be working West and Ware in more than I thought. They're both talented players but so is Jamaal so I was wondering how they would split the work this year. New offensive coordinators Brad Childress and Matt Nagy could get creative this year.
