The Kansas City Chiefs remain open to selling the naming rights to Arrowhead Stadium, according to story from the KC Star's Terez Paylor. Chiefs president Mark Donovan is quoted in Terez's story and says that the Chiefs would keep the Arrowhead Stadium in there and make it, for example, 'Corporate field' at Arrowhead Stadium.
I vote against selling the naming rights even though no one asked me. Arrowhead is unique because of its history and ties to KC. 1972 is pretty old! (Sorry to anyone 44 or older) Adding some large company's name to the front of Arrowhead would not feel right. It's not my business and I'm not responsible for it so I don't really care whether the Chiefs get an extra $6 million per year from the naming rights.
Sports Authority Field at Mile High is an example of this strategy and that's kinda my point. Sports Authority Field is a giant corporation that no one has any personal connection to. Arrowhead is very personal to many people. Those two don't mix. And then what happens when your naming rights partner goes bankrupt? You become an embarrassment like the ... well, you know, the bad guys. This isn't like moving from Coke to Pepsi as your official soda provider.
The only way I could get on board with this is if the name is something local or something that Kansas Citians can identify with. Boulevard Field at Arrowhead? I can get behind that.
Which name could you approve?
