Kansas City Chiefs will do some free agency work at the NFL Combine, too

New, comments

The Kansas City Chiefs will be going to the NFL Combine this week with the intent of learning about some of the 2016 NFL Draft eligible players but also getting some other business done. The NFL Combine is one of the few times where almost all teams and many agents are under one roof so you can expect some free agency work to get done, too.

For the Chiefs, there is a ton of work to do. The Chiefs need to figure something out with Eric Berry, who is scheduled to be a free agent on March 9. It's been said the two sides are talking and we're hoping they can get a deal done this week so that they keep the franchise tag available for another player (like Sean Smith).

The Chiefs also have DT Jaye Howard to deal with. He is a free agent as well after a strong season under his belt. He is somewhat unknown because this was his first year as a regular player so there will be some interest around him at the Combine.

LB Derrick Johnson recently said on the radio that he hopes to get a deal done with the Chiefs but we haven't heard anything from the front office on that.

The Chiefs will also be talking to other team's free agents. I wouldn't expect the Chiefs to go crazy in free agency this year simply because many of the best players available happen to be the Chiefs own free agents mentioned above. However, the Chiefs sign a free agent or two each year that flies under the radar but ends up playing an important role on the team. I'm talking about a Tyvon Branch or a Jason Avant (who was the Chiefs best receiver on the field in the biggest game in the past two decades).

Here's the Chiefs list of free agents. Who else should they be talking to?

S Eric Berry

LB Derrick Johnson

CB Sean Smith

DT Jaye Howard

LB Tamba Hali*

QB Chase Daniel

Tyvon Branch

DE Mike DeVito

Jeff Allen

Husain Abdullah

WR Jason Avant

*Not technically a free agent but his contract will void.
