Andy Reid has a connection to Super Bowl 50. The Kansas City Chiefs coach once had Ron Rivera as an assistant on his staff while with the Philadelphia Eagles. Rivera, the Carolina Panthers head coach, tries to become the second former Andy Reid assistant to go on to coach a team to a Super Bowl title. John Harbaugh, who was with Reid in Philly, went on to become a head coach and win a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens.
Of the eight coaches on Andy Reid's coaching tree, four are still currently head coaches (bolded).
- Brad Childress, Minnesota Vikings (2006-2010)
- John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens (2008-present)
- Steve Spagnuolo, St. Louis Rams (2009-2011)
- Leslie Frazier, Minnesota Vikings (2010-2013)
- Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers (2011-present)
- Pat Shurmur, Cleveland Browns (2011-2012)
- Todd Bowles, New York Jets (2015-present)
- Doug Pederson, Philadelphia Eagles (2016-present)
Reid's background is on offense so it's interesting to see so many defensive coaches included here. Only Childress, Shurmur and Pederson have mainly offensive backgrounds. Perhaps this bodes well for Bob Sutton's chances at a head coaching job one day.
