Former Patriots LB Jerod Mayo was on CSN in New England this week talking about the AFC playoff field, which is almost set. We know the six teams that will be in - Patriots, Raiders, Steelers, Texans, Chiefs, Dolphins - but not the seeding.
The theme these playoffs seems to be who can beat the Patriots so I was interested to hear what Mayo said about the Chiefs and Patriots.
“Defense and special teams and that’s what Kansas City brings,” Mayo said about the currently fifth-seeded Chiefs. “That’s why I think they’re a huge threat in the AFC.”
Talking about special teams being important used to feel like coach speak. Then Dave Toub arrived, the Chiefs had one of the best special teams units and it became a big factor. Even moreso this year, the Tyreek Hill factor.
I would be fascinated to see how the Patriots would defend the Chiefs. I would probably learn more about the Chiefs watching how Bill Belichick defends them than I could any other way. Mostly, I want to know how Belichick would defend Tyreek. It’s hard to defend pure speed like that.
Here’s to hoping we see this matchup in the AFC Championship game.
