Tennessee Titans coach says Kansas City Chiefs stats don’t look impressive but ...

Sam Mellinger has a nice piece out today looking at where the Kansas City Chiefs rank in some key categories and how crazy it is that they’re this good with those rankings. The Chiefs are 24th in offense and 27th in defense and Sam found that in the last 20 years no AFC or NFC championship team has had a similar ranking.

“That's the one thing, if you look at their statistics, they don't look very impressive,” Titans coach Mike Mularkey said. “They're in the 20's in a lot of areas.”

But...

“That gives you a false sense,” he continued. “They're very disciplined. They don't make a lot of mistakes. I talk about complementary football; they play complementary football. All three phases score for them. You can tell it's a well-coached football team and very complementary how they play off of each other.”

Therein lies the rub about the Chiefs. The stats say they shouldn’t be this good yet we all watch this team and know they will wait you out and capitalize on your mistakes. We’re 13 games into the season. The Chiefs have been good for three-plus years now. The talk of flukes is over. This is one of those times where the stats don’t tell the whole story.
