Justin Houston should know what “next man up” means after Derrick Johnson’s injury

How do you replace Derrick Johnson? The Kansas City Chiefs are going to find out. I respect the “next man up” philosophy but it’s hard to believe that when you’re talking about someone like DJ.

Then again, the Chiefs did this with Justin Houston when he missed the first half of the season, something Houston pointed out after the Raiders game.

“It’s the motto we’ve been having,” Houston said. “The next man up. They said that about me and they kept it together the first 8-9 games I missed this season. It’s a motto. We know the next man up is whoever. You’re one play away from playing so you have to be prepared whether you’re starting or not. Everyone must come in the game prepared.”

It’s the right attitude, no matter how hard it is. But they did win without Jamaal Charles. They did win without Justin Houston. We’ll find out next week against Tennessee if they can stop the run and win without DJ.

Justin Houston says with DJ it's next man up. "That's what happened to me."
