The Chiefs can’t beat the Falcons without being better on third down

The Kansas City Chiefs offense will need to be much better against the Atlanta Falcons this weekend than they were in Denver last week (save the final few minutes and overtime ... they can do that all day).

The Falcons are the No. 1 ranked offense in the NFL at more than 32 points per game. They’ve scored 30 or more points in four of their last five games. The Chiefs have scored more than 20 once in their last four games.

The Chiefs have to be good on offense to score points but also as stated above to control the flow of the game. That’s especially important this week as the best defense against the Falcons is keeping their offense off of the field. How to do that? Extend drives to keep the ball longer, which will require being better on third down.

The Chiefs are one of the worst third down offenses in the NFL. They can’t win this game with a bunch of three and outs. This isn’t going to be a 10-9 game with the Chiefs driving late and still in the game despite an awful game on offense.

This is big boy offense. The Chiefs are going up against the NFL’s best offense and an MVP candidate in Matt Ryan. They proved they can hang with elite defenses in last week’s win over Denver. Now time to prove they can hang with the best offenses.
