Yeah, yeah it’s too early for 2017 NFL mock drafts. The season isn’t even over and the Kansas City Chiefs are actually pretty good. I don’t pay attention to mocks much this time of year but this one from Matt Miller stood out.
Miller has the Chiefs picking at No. 24 and has them selecting a guy who was once thought to be a candidate for the No. 1 pick: Clemson QB Deshaun Watson.
Deshaun Watson took a step back this season, which is why we see the fall down draft boards. A smallish quarterback at 6'3" and 215 pounds, Watson struggled with interceptions outside the hashes and missed passes all over the field. But he was still a dynamic playmaker with over 3,600 yards passing, over 400 yards rushing and 38 touchdowns accounted for this season.
There’s some debate over how high he will go but I do think that quarterback is going to be on the table for the Chiefs in this year’s draft. I’m not sure what will happen to Alex Smith - I’m assuming they’ll keep him - after this season. Alex’s deal is up after the 2018 season though so this next draft is when the Chiefs would need to start planning for this.
The draft will be fun next year. But I’m not quite there yet.
