Packers cut Knile Davis right when the Chiefs need another back

New, comments

Here’s one I didn’t expect to hear: the Packers released Knile Davis. Acme Packing Company called it a bit of a surprise.

The Packers made the trade for Knile two weeks ago. It was the first trade Packers GM Ted Thompson had made since 2010 so I just assumed he would stick with the team.

The trade was reportedly for a conditional 2018 draft pick so I imagine this release means that draft pick won’t be happening.

It’s also a coincidence that we sit here talking about this right as the Chiefs need a back. Andy Reid said when the trade went down that Knile is a good player whose strengths aren’t necessarily things the Chiefs are looking for in their offense.

Despite that, the Chiefs need a back and Knile is available. Spencer Ware has a concussion (an actual concussion, unlike Alex Smith) and history says there’s a good shot he won’t play this weekend against the Jaguars. Jamaal Charles is visiting the doctor so I’m not counting on him this week either.

Darrin Reaves from the practice squad is a possibility. So is Knile Davis, assuming there weren’t any bridges burned. Let’s see how this one plays out.
