The Kansas City Chiefs have trimmed their roster from 75 to 53 players ahead of Saturday's NFL roster cuts deadline. The big surprise for me is that DL Mike Catapano was cut. I thought he had a shot at being a contributor despite missing all of the 2014 season with an illness.
UPDATE: Chiefs first 53-man roster
The Chiefs also traded safety Kelcie McCray to the Seahawks, who were rumored to be looking for safeties. I was wondering if the Chiefs would trade him because they have so many quality safeties right now. Both second team safeties - Eric Berry and Tyvon Branch - have been in a Pro Bowl. McCray came to the Chiefs in a trade from the Bucs last year.
One draft pick was cut: seventh rounder WR Da'Ron Brown. Fifth round pick DJ Alexander was a possible bubble player but he made the initial 53-man roster.
Also of note is the Chiefs cutting C Eric Kush. He has practice squad eligibility so he could be back but he was the first team center for most of the offseason until the team hit camp.
The Chiefs roster cuts
OL Garrett Frye
LB James-Michael Johnson
WR Fred Williams
WR Da'Ron Brown
RB Spencer Ware
OL Daniel Munyer
DB Kevin Short
LB Ja'Gared Davis

OT Derek Sherrod
OT Jarrod Pughsley

DT Hebron Fangupo

*Commings was reportedly waived / injured which means he would revert back to the Chiefs IR if he clears waivers.
These moves were also made:
Richard Gordon was placed on injured reserve, which means his season is over. He was a candidate as the emergency tight end they call up whenever someone is hurt but not anymore.
S Kelcie McCray was traded to the Seahawks for a draft pick. It was rumored the Seahawks were looking for a safety and McCray is a good player. He would have been cut if not.
Sean Smith moved to reserve / suspended list. The Chiefs are able to get an exemption so he will be back after the Chiefs Monday night game in Green Bay.
