Chiefs' Phillip Gaines has a knee sprain

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

UPDATEGaines tore his ACL and is done for the year.

I think I'm sighing as I read that the injury to Kansas City Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines is just a knee sprain.

Gaines was hurt early in the Chiefs loss to the Packers. It looked like his injury was a non-contact situation which made me very nervous because those are often more serious. But it appears that may not be the case as Andy Reid reported after the game it was a knee sprain. We shall see if he misses any time. An MRI could reveal more (or less!).

His absence did hurt the Chiefs as they were forced to play Tyvon Branch at nickel for the rest of the game.

The good news here is that the Chiefs get Sean Smith back on Tuesday. He was suspended the first three games but he is now back and in the fold. It's great timing* for Smith's return if Gaines has to miss any time.

*Great timing actually would have been before that Broncos game but I digress...
