Free agent Evan Mathis has Seahawks visit scheduled, nothing from Chiefs yet

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Because the Kansas City Chiefs have yet to figure out who their right guard will be we continue to get questions about free agent guard Evan Mathis. We haven't had any sort of update on Mathis until now where it appears he has a visit with the Seattle Seahawks scheduled that he may or may not take.

The Dolphins were reportedly interested at some point but there was a gap in how much the team wanted to play and how much Mathis apparently wanted. I don't know why there's this "He may sign somewhere else first!" part of this story. Frankly, if I were a free agent and there wasn't a lot of interest in me I would say something similar. So that's an odd sign.

So, are the Chiefs interested? I say it's unlikely because the Chiefs have a number of young guards that they need to find out about. Mathis is probably better than Laurent Duvernay-Tardif or Zach Fulton but those are young players the Chiefs have to get on the field at some point. It would be better for the makeup of the team if a cheap LDT or Fulton ends up being the starter rather than Mathis on a $5 million free agent contract.

The Chiefs have just over $9 million in cap space, which means they could afford Mathis. If they wanted to.
