Chiefs' Derrick Johnson hopes to play another four or five more years

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Interesting stuff from NFL.com's Gil Brandt, who wrote a report on the Kansas City Chiefs training camp. Read the whole thing because there is a lot of good stuff in there but this about Derrick Johnson stuck out to me:

"The linebacker, who missed almost all of 2014 with an Achilles injury, is a special player. He told us how good he felt -- that, in fact, he's hoping to play another four or five years."

DJ will be turning 33 in November.

I was wondering back in June if the Chiefs would consider extending him as he enters the final year of his contract. If he puts in a solid season, I can certainly see the Chiefs giving him a contract extension. DJ Alexander was drafted this year but we're far from figuring out what he is capable of as a player. Special teams coach Dave Toub said Alexander would have to make the roster on special teams.

This is something the Chiefs are aware of, too. Back in March, Clark Hunt was quoted by the Star as saying: "You mentioned that his contract is up this year. There will be a point in time where we address that. But it just hasn't been germane to this point."
