Guess who's back? Eric Berry's BACK!
UPDATE: Berry hits the field (pictures)!
Andy Reid hinted at it with us on Tuesday afternoon and by about 10 p.m. last night the Kansas City Chiefs made the official announcement that Berry has been cleared to practice after being diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma last November.
After several rounds of thorough testing and a process that concluded late Tuesday evening, Chiefs safety Eric Berry has been cleared to take the practice field with the club for Wednesday morning's practice with quarterbacks, rookies and injured players.
Incredible. The Chiefs will make the formal announcement at a Wednesday press conference. We were wondering what was up because Andy Reid told myself and the assembled media on Tuesday afternoon that the Chiefs would have some news on Berry soon and that everything was positive. Since we've been so concerned with Eric Berry the person rather than the football player, I just figured this was a positive update on his health. I didn't realize he would be practice-ready.
This changes quite a few things. The Chiefs did not behave this offseason like a team that thought it was getting a Pro Bowl safety back. They signed Ron Parker to a long-term deal and inked Tyvon Branch. However, while Reid said that Berry has kept himself in good shape, there is surely still some unknown there given everything that's gone down since Berry last saw the field in December.
I'm still honestly surprised that I'm even writing this. It was only eight months ago that Berry was diagnosed with cancer. And now here we sit. #BerryStrong!
