I always keep an eye out around NFL Draft time for comments from folks with the Kansas City Chiefs that might hint where they're going. Sometimes it actually does mean something, sometimes it doesn't.
Chiefs fans talk about the possibility of taking an inside linebacker with their first round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. They point to Derrick Johnson recovering from an Achilles injury at 32 years old. An inside linebacker would be good insurance. And they're right, that logic would hold up with me. Replace one of your aging or free agency bound star players with a first round pick.
So that brings me to this comment from Chiefs owner Clark Hunt a few weeks ago. The KC Star's Terez Paylor talked to Hunt about DJ returning and at the end of the quote in the Star, Hunt said: "You mentioned that [DJ's] contract is up this year. There will be a point in time where we address that. But it just hasn't been germane to this point."
Hmm. So let's just say that means they're thinking of an extension for DJ. They've already got Josh Mauga signed up to a new three-year deal and the Chiefs are already second in the NFL in linebacker spending. Does that sound like a team ready to select an inside linebacker in the first round?
