Sean McGrath making a comeback but not with the Kansas City Chiefs

New, comments

McGrath abruptly retired before the 2014 season but is apparently making a comeback.

Remember former Kansas City Chiefs TE Sean McGrath? He surprisingly retired at 26 years old at the start of the Chiefs training camp last year. Now he's making a comeback -- except it won't be with the Chiefs.

McGrath ominously tweeted this a few days ago (which I missed initially):

Then the NFL's transactions list on Wednesday listed McGrath's name in two spots -- he was reinstated to the league AND the Chiefs formally waived him. So that makes him a free agent.

The KC Star's Terez Paylor confirmed the news with the agent.

McGrath, who was known as The Beard in Kansas City because of his incredible beard, did an admirable job catching 26 balls for 302 yards as one of the Chiefs tight ends in 2013.

Fast forward to the 2014 season, I'm up at the Chiefs training camp waiting to talk to some players who are just arriving on the first day. McGrath walked right past us and into the facility and then walked back out a little while later. We found out the next day that McGrath had decided to retire.

Now he's back. But not with the Chiefs;
