With the 12th pick in the 2015 Arrowhead Pride mock draft, Cleveland Browns GM ryanyankee2362 selects...
Washington NT Danny Shelton
I narrowed the pick down to the Browns biggest needs: QB, NT, WR, and DE.
I crossed off QB right away because with Winston and Mariota off the board, there are no QBs worthy of being picked 12th overall. After losing Jabaal Sheard in free agency, and with Phil Taylor returning to his usual NT position, the Browns need to pick up a DE. The Browns also have the 19th overall pick, and I think either Randy Gregory or Bud Dupree could be available there.
WR is still a need for the Browns, but after signing Dwayne Bowe and Brian Hartline, it isn't as big of a need. They need to draft a receiver or two unlike last year, but it no longer has to come in the first round. If DeVante Parker was available, I probably would have picked him. But since he's not, I will consider picking a WR at 19 such as Breshad Perriman, DGB, or Jaelen Strong, in addition to considering a DE there.
So were left with a NT. The Browns run defense was awful last year, and they let their starting NT Ahtyba Rubin go in free agency. Like I said above, Coach Mike Pettine has said that Phil Taylor will be switching back from DE to his usual NT position this season. Taylor did well as the Browns NT in 2013, but he's an injury risk (he only played five games last year), and he's a free agent after this season (the Browns have already let Rubin and Sheard leave in free agency, so maybe there's a trend here).
Danny Shelton can come in and take some snaps off Taylor this season to make sure Taylor stays healthy. After Shelton learns the ropes from Taylor this year, the Browns can choose to let Taylor leave in free agency making Shelton the starting NT of the future, or they can resign Taylor and kick him back over to DE which is a position that the Browns would still lack depth wise even if they use and early round pick on one.
Danny Shelton is a physical specimen who dominated the Pac-12 last season. He has the strength and athleticism to dominate in the running game, and with the Browns shady run defense, they would be wise to pick him.
