NFL mock draft 2015: Why the Chiefs chose OT Andrus Peat

SB Nation's annual 2015 NFL bloggers mock draft kicked off last week and I just made my pick for the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 18.

Drum roll, please....

Stanford OT Andrus Peat

The top three receivers in Amari Cooper, Kevin White and DeVante Parker were off the board and I would have considered any of those three. From there I wanted to focus on the top cornerbacks and offensive linemen. I really like Michigan State CB Trae Waynes but he was already gone. And I also really like Iowa OT Brandon Scherff and LSU OT La'El Collins but both those players were gone.

See all the players remaining here. I ended up deciding on Peat.

I tried to think like the Chiefs brass when making this decision. I look at the past few years when the Chiefs have let their own offensive linemen walk in free agency. So that suggests to me that maybe they think they can use the draft and free agency to plug some of these holes, which they did with the free agent signing of Paul Fanaika and the trade for Ben Grubbs.

Center is too early at No. 18 for me so that left me with offensive tackle. The Chiefs have Donald Stephenson and perhaps Jeff Allen competing at right tackle this offseason. Both players are entering the final years of their contracts. Allen is potentially switching positions -- if he does indeed end up at right tackle. Stephenson didn't play last year for whatever reason. Now I think those players can play but based on the Chiefs actions (potentially moving Allen's position and not playing Stephenson) I wonder how much faith the Chiefs have in them.

So that's how I decided on an offensive tackle, Andrus Peat, for the Chiefs.

I can easily be talked out of this pick.  How awful / great is this pick?
