Is John Dorsey attached to his high draft picks?

[Note: Worthy and Sherrod may make zero impact with the Kansas City Chiefs, that is already understood, and now, noted.]

Here we go, AP.

Looking up and down the Chiefs roster thinking about the commonalities between John Dorsey and Scott Pioli (don't ask why), I noticed that they both unearthed some of their former high draft picks with their new teams.

Only, Scott Pioli is paying a little more for players like Jon Asamoah and Tyson Jackson. Combined, those two have a cap hit of about 8 millions this season (Spotrac). The notable exception is Javier Arenas; his cap hit is about 635, 000...

I find it interesting that John Dorsey is also going back to his old home to dust off some former Packer draft picks: Derek Sherrod was the 32nd overall pick in 2011, while Jerel Worthy was the 51st selection in 2012. Now they're on the Chiefs roster.

Yet, John Dorsey isn't out millions of dollars for these guys with the Chiefs, as both signed manageable futures contracts, Sherrod one year, Worthy two years. It's a nice platform for both former college standouts to get a fresh start. However, it begs the question:

Is John Dorsey attached to his high draft picks?

When Scott Pioli was fired, the word "ego" was thrown around a lot. With John, people immediately said, "Ego isn't an issue. John Dorsey is a working man's GM." -- (whatever that means)

Two years later, we see Mr. Dorsey clearly dipping into his draft-pick junkyard, kicking the busted tires, pacing with chewed fingers... The follow up question is:

What if it's just good business?

Perhaps our fearless leader is simply doing his due diligence. After all, Derek and Jerel weren't like Tyson, Javier and Jon... they were injured. And Green Bay simply moved on.

Now, maybe that always bothered John Dorsey, or maybe it was a coincidence. Either way, John Dorsey has a chance to right some wrongs on his resume and improve the Kansas City Chiefs at the same time. It seems like a decent enough plan, but is it the right approach? I don't know.

Approach aside, it is what is. The Chiefs have a couple former high round picks that are stil only 24 and 25 years old, respectively. And, they play at positions of value in the NFL: tackles on offense and defense.

Personally, I've always liked Derek Sherrod. When the Chiefs drafted Jon Baldwin, Sherrod was the pick that I was hoping for. I'm curious to see how he'll do now that he's in Chiefs red and gold. If he can overcome his injuries, I still think he might become a solid NFL tackle for years. AP, here's to Derek's new opportunity as a Chief.

For Jerel Worthy, his story has some tragedy. Not only is he a second round pick now labeled an NFL bust, but he's also dealt with some real human adversity when his grandmother was accidentally shot and killed in 2014. Here's the link:

NFL player's grandmother, shot accidentally, has died.

It's a sad story that you can follow if you'd like to, but for Jerel, what an NFL journey. Football is a game, but for men like Jerel, it's also a career and a way to make an excellent living that has a revolving exit door.

I can only imagine, but to me, here's a gifted athlete that's been pushed to the brink of madness by reality. He's either going to make it in the NFL, or he's not. And now, he's a Kansas City Chief, and I for one will be rooting for Jerel Worthy to stay healthy and put it all together despite the odds. People say his knock has been work ethic, but based on his circumstances, I don't think we're going to see many 300+ lb players come in and give it their all like we'll see with Worthy. But admittedly, maybe that's hyperbole.

It might be the same hyperbole John Dorsey is buying into. I don't know. But with these types of players, I don't believe John Dorsey is chasing his ego Scott Pioli style. I genuinely believe John Dorsey picked them up because he feels they can help the Chiefs improve, or at least, I want to believe that.

Please, someone that's not a huge Chiefs homer, set me straight. Is John Dorsey chasing his ego and resume, or is John Dorsey chasing an attainable Super Bowl?

Geaux Chiefs!!!
