Grading Kansas City Chiefs first week in free agency

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Chiefs entered free agency with most of us thinking they might be small players due to their limited cap space. A week full of moves later and the Chiefs were surprisingly active.

Notable players acquired by the Chiefs include WR Jeremy Maclin, G Ben Grubbs, G Paul Fanaika and Tyvon Branch. The Chiefs also re-signed LB Josh Mauga and S Ron Parker as well as the restructures for LB Tamba Hali and DE Mike DeVito. There's also the franchise tag for one Justin Houston, which is the best of all of them in this group.

Notable players lost by the Chiefs include C Rodney Hudson, WR Dwayne Bowe, TE Anthony Fasano and DE Vance Walker.

The games haven't been played and the Chiefs haven't even had a practice yet. So of course it's time to grade how they did in the first week of free agency.

The "good" grades in free agency are usually about how active a team is. And we know that history says the most active teams in free agency are not usually the best teams. So grading free agency is kind of weird. We'll do it anyway.

It's fairly simple for me. The Chiefs two biggest holes heading into free agency were wide receiver and guard. The Chiefs are in better spots at those positions now than they were a week ago. Even without some of the other moves, that's enough for me to give the Chiefs an A in free agency.

March is the time when the true homer comes out in you. I'll bookmark this post and try to revisit it in November and see if I was right.

What's your grade?
